Formative Activities

Formative Activities (FAs) are mandatory educational experiences designed to help students develop specific skills through guided work under the supervision of a tutor. Depending on the tutor’s expertise and availability, FAs may include experimental, numerical, or theoretical activities.

How to Start a Formative Activity

To begin an FA, the student must:

  1. Choose and contact a university tutor from the professors of the Bachelor’s in Engineering Sciences.
  2. Agree on the activity to be carried out under the tutor’s supervision.
  3. Upon completion, the tutor will sign the Formative Activity Form, certifying that the student has earned the required credits.
  4. FA credits are awarded without a numerical grade.

Credits and Structure

  • Each FA corresponds to 3 credits, equivalent to 75 hours of supervised work.
  • FAs may be carried out:
    • under the supervision of a university tutor,
    • within an internal or external internship, or
    • as part of ERASMUS activities (managed by the relevant university offices).
  • The results of the FA analyses, data, experimental outcomes, or acquired skills may be used in preparation for the final exam.
  • The same tutor may also act as supervisor for the final exam (optional).

Final Exam

The final exam is worth 6 credits (150 hours), to be added to the FA credits. Students are admitted to the graduation session once a professor of the Bachelor in Engineering Sciences signs the eligibility form, issued by the central secretariat, certifying that the student is ready to undertake the exam.

Requirements

  • Mandatory: a presentation approved by a Bachelor professor.
  • Optional but recommended: a written document (Thesis).

Evaluation by the Graduation Commission

Up to 7 additional points may be awarded based on the quality and type of work submitted:

  • 1–2 points for presentation only.
  • 3–4 points for a bibliographic Thesis.
  • Up to the maximum score for research-based work with a written Thesis.

Tutor and Supervisor

It is common practice, although not mandatory, for the same professor to oversee both the Formative Activity and the final exam, serving as both tutor and supervisor. Given the significant workload involved (75+150 hours), students who wish to follow this path are strongly encouraged to contact their preferred professor well in advance, ideally 4 to 6 months before the expected graduation date.
